In 1990, in recognition of his work on the history of popular entertainment, Bowling Green University awarded Anthony Slide a honorary doctorate of letters. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF VAUDEVILLE (published in 1994) was named outstanding academic book of the year by �Choice� magazine, best reference book of the year by �Library Journal� and outstanding reference source of the year by the American Library Association. His 1986 book, THE AMERICAN FILM INDUSTRY: A HISTORICAL DICTIONARY, was named outstanding reference source of the year by the American Library Association, and the sequel volume, THE INTERNATIONAL FILM INDUSTRY: A HISTORICAL DICTIONARY, was named outstanding academic book of the year by �Choice� magazine. He is also editor of the �Filmmakers� series published by Scarecrow Press, and numbering more than 115 volumes. (2004), both published by the University Press of Kentucky, and INSIDE THE HOLLYWOOD FAN MAGAZINES: A HISTORY OF STAR MAKERS, FABRICATORS, AND GOSSIP MONGERS (2010), published by the University Press of Mississippi. Among his most recent academic books are SILENT PLAYERS: A BIOGRAPHICAL AND AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STUDY OF 100 SILENT FILM ACTORS AND ACTRESSES (2002) and AMERICAN RACIST: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF THOMAS DIXON He published his first book, EARLY AMERICAN CINEMA, in 1970, and among his more than seventy additional works are A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO MOVIE MEMORABILIA and A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO TV MEMORABILIA, both of which are considered definitive works in their respective fields.
